The clash between the top two sides fancied for the title was comfortably won by the
home side. Their strength in depth, with every rider contributing at least one paid or
actual race win, could not be matched by the visiting Panthers, who relied too heavily
on ex-Pirate Troy Batchelor, who began his night's work with three wins, including a six
point tactical victory, on his way to a tally of fourteen, and diminutive Dane Kenneth
Bjerre, who opened with a win and ended with eleven, paid twelve. Niels-Kristen Iversen
fell in his first outing and went on to have a disappointing meeting, managing a total
of just four points, the best support for the top two coming from reserve Krzystof
Buczkowski, who had a busy evening with six rides, including three on the trot,
for a total of five, paid six.
In contrast the Pirates were solid throughout. Holder dropped his only point in
five rides to his Australian rival Batchelor, skipper Davey Watt was paid for double figures,
Bjarne Pedersen, despite blanks in his opening and final rides, was unbeaten by an
opponent in his other three, Darcy Ward, Jason Doyle, and Leon Madsen also contributed good
middle-order scores, but the WESSEX MARINE sponsored 'Rider of the Night'
award deservedly went to a man already a cult hero at Wimborne Road; Gary Havelock. The
former World Champion and ex-Pirates skipper, deputising for absent Pole Artur Mroczka,
received a rapturous round of applause when he received his award from Wessex Marine's Guy Adams.
The rivalries will be renewed when the Pirates visit the East of England Showground for the
return match this Friday evening, 9th April.
