Speedway, as is the case with all motorsports, depends heavily on sponsorship to exist. Clubs these days operate their own marketing departments in order to help their own budgets. Riders however, particularly in the harsh current economic climate, have to rely increasingly on the generousity of supporters coming forward with spontaneous cash donations to help ease the strain on their own racing budgets which have diminished in line with the sponsorship budgets available to businesses today.
In 2009 Ipswich Speedway assessed the cost for each individual team member for an average meeting as follows; Engine wear and tear £80, Clutch wear and tear £50, Rear Tyre £35, Miscellaneous Breakages £30, Insurance £22.50, Oil £15, Sundries £7, Goggles & tear-offs £6.50, Methanol (fuel) £6 = Total of £252 per meeting.
This is regardless of points money, which may not cover expenses, and the pence-per-mile travel allowance which in no way cover the real costs incurred at todays prices.
It is therefore obvious that all riders need to maximise their marketing potential by introducing schemes that will prove attractive to everyone; Companies large and small, the self-employed, individuals, and groups of supporters. Only by providing value for money recognition will we be able to attract the much-needed new sponsors to our sport.
For a long time speedway has relied on its hard-core, long-term supporters to help it through hard times. Now it needs to recognise that we need to expand our horizons and introduce new schemes and incentives that will help attract new money into the sport, whilst still recognising and rewarding those we have for so long relied upon.
